Enjoy a Farmers Market!

farmers_marketHave you ever thought about how your food makes it from the farm to your table?  The fact is that your food has probably journeyed hundreds, if not thousands of miles to get to your local grocery store.  With all that traveling, the food you eat can actually indirectly add to your carbon footprint (your secondary carbon footprint).

Perhaps now is the time to think more about your food and consider more local options.  Take advantage of the weather and stop by a farmers market this summer to enjoy fresher, more eco-friendly produce.  Browse our list of local farmers markets to find one near you.



Trashy Fashion

Calling all paper bead makers! Help make beads by attending the Library’s monthly crafting group, Get Hooked.  Paper bead makers are needed to help create a beaded dress for MGPL’s entry in SWANCC’s Trashy Fashion Show, to be held Friday, November 13, 7 pm, at the Glenview Park District Park Center. Garments will be judged on visual impact, originality, use of “trash” (MGPL’s dress will be made of recycled flyers) and practicality.

Limit: 20. Registration is required.
Location: Conference Room (second floor)

Art on a Rain Barrel Competition

rainbarrelThe Chicago Botanic Garden and the governor of Illinois are sponsoring the Art on a Rain Barrel (AoRB) contest.  Open to children and teens between the ages of 8 – 18, AoRB is an Illinois-wide competition in which the top 50 teams will be invited to display their barrels at the AoRB festival on 9/19/2009.

The deadline to submit entries (forms + 2-dimenstional rendering of the design) is Wednesday, June 10.  For complete rules and details, visit the Chicago Botanic Garden’s AoRB page.



A Green Picnic Can Be a Great Picnic

The warmer weather and sunshine means that picnic season is upon us! Along with ants, however, picnics often bring with them an abundance of garbage. Consider making your picnics a little greener this year with a few simple tips:picnic

  • Store food in reusable containers.
  • Consider bringing reusable tableware or purchase recycled paper and plastic products.
  • Don’t be a Litterbug.
  • Enjoy your surroundings!

Going Green Event at the Library: Container Gardening Do’s and Don’ts

Master Gardener Colleen Graudins will present an illustrated discussion about: choosing containers, determining the best types of potting soil, arranging colors, and selecting plants. Registration is requested.gardening1

Spring Cleaning Reuse and Recycle Event at Golf Mill Shopping Center

Have clutter?  If you’re ready to part with your not-so-useful-anymore stuff, make a trip to the Spring Cleaning Reuse and Recycle event at the Golf Mill Shopping Center in Niles on Saturday, May 2, from 11am – 4pm.  Examples of items that will be accepted include:

  • Household electronics (computers, monitors, cell phones, PDA’s, video game consoles, etc.)
  • Printer cartridges
  • Gently used clothing and furniture
  • Household hardware (kitchen and bathroom fixtures, doors, windows, and light fixtures, etc.)

If you have any questions about what items are acceptable to donate, contact the Golf Mill Shopping Center office at 847-699-1070.
